Book reviewBlue Like Friday
What would you do if your best friends mom disapeared? Would you call the cops, try to find her yourself, or just let your friend handle it by waiting patiently for her to show up? In Blue like Friday, by Siobahn Parkinson, Olivia had to make that choice after she helped her friend Hal with a prank call that was supposed to cause a chain reaction that would make his mom dump her boyfriend. Instead, it caused her to drive away in a fury and not come back after several days.
After this Olivia has to try to figure out where Hal's mom is, deal with a series of set-backs and delays, includeing a couple interactions with the cops, and keep Hal's hopes up about His mom. She had a rather hard time convincig him that his mom wasn't going to leave him, so that he would have no parents left. The 2 of them try extremely hard to find his mom but simply cannot until Olivia finds out a shocking surprise from her own mom. I imagined how I would feel if my mom dissapeared like that, and how upset I would get.
People who like books that are a mixture of emotions and funny things would love Blue like Friday. I would reccomend it for most kids between ages 7 and 14. This book was not a very good book for the project, because while Hal occasionaly shows signs of synesthesia, there aren't enough to make sure, and it doesn't tell you anything about synesthesia at all. Those looking for a book on synesthesia are advised too look elsewhere.
